New Mixtapes.

Pop punk outfit of awesome Mixtapes released their new EP Hope Is Important last week. Needless to say it’s fantastic, and you should head over to http://animalstylerecords.bandcamp.com/ and pick it up for a paltry 5 bucks. It probably won’t blow your mind as it’s more of the same from Cincinatti’s finest, but it will, because they’re consistently great.

What sets Mixtapes aside from the rest of the pop punk crowd for me, isn’t just the juxtaposition of sweet female/gruff male vocals or any of that, but the slightly grumpy, don’t want to party all the time but with an underlying sense of positivity lyrics.

Anyway, enough from me, they just released a video for the title track from “Hope Is For People”. Watch it, fall in love with it and all of that Latterman inspired pop punk summer stuff.

There are still no plans for them to come to the UK as yet, but they’re heading out across the US this Summer with Dear Landlord, and later with Red City Radio. (which I’m a little gutted about missing)

Check out their bandcamp here

New Red City Radio Video!

Remember how I put Spinning In Circles Is A Gateway Drug in my best of the year list?

Well, now I’m stoked that Red City Radio have released a video for the very same audio masterpiece. It’s by no means world changing, it’s pretty standard punk fair as far as videos go, but it’s still catchy as fuck and cheering up my slightly miserable, rainy Thursday afternoon.

It does however, make me feel massively aware that I work in marketing.

sunny sunday awesome/help save ifyoumakeit.

I don’t know how many of you are aware of the awesomeness that is ifyoumakeit. If you’re not you should be. It’s the bestest punk rock video site on the whole wide interwebs and that’s for all the right reasons.

I post the stuff here a fair amount, I’m addicted to the pink couch sessions and pretty much everything else about it. You can also pick up a bunch of free/donation based records from some fucking incredible bands. In short. This site rules.

David, the dude who runs it all is having some financial difficulties and doesn’t think he’s going to be able to continue running it the way he has been for a while. This is BAD news people. but YOU can help, sling him a couple bucks  via the donate button on the homepage and help keep something awesome alive.

Yeah! Up The Punks!

Oh, and now you should watch Good Luck,  Stars Were Exploding, and feel pretty damn good about yourself.

Also, I haven’t posted here for a while, I’ve been drowning in my tumblr, but don’t worry I’m planning on actually writing something soon. I know, exciting right?

pop culture overload

Hi. It’s been a little while, I’ve been using my tumblr ‘cos I haven’t really felt like writing much. My life continues it’s flux heavy passage so I decided to stay in this whole weekend to make sense of it. In fact what I did was consumed popculture by the bucketload, I’m warning you, don’t come near me – I can’t interact with you unless you’re a text.

So far this weekend I have watched:

  • The Unusuals – S01E01 – I read a Salon blog about the pilot and was stoked it was released. I can’t tell if it’s a dramedy or not. If David Lynch had directed Hill Street Blues but imagined it to be NYPB blue set in Picket Fences. That might be this. Oh, and Amber Tamblyn and Adam Goldberg rule. Really. I have missed Adam Goldberg
  • Harpers Island – S01E01 – If Point Pleasant (minus the Supernatural) met I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but was set in the Pacific Northwest, this’d be that. It features some pretty good death scenes, a somewhat intriguing plot and camerawork I haven’t seen the likes of since The Colbys. (points for having the dude who plays Bobbly from Supernatural in though)
  • Parks and Recreation – S01E04 Hmmmmm – Was it me or was this pilot a little bit on the meh, side? I was expecting a little more from Amy Poehler. It’s nice to see Paul Schneider (swoon) in something un-Southern though. I’m gonna give it another couple of episodes before I quit
  • Party Down – S01E04 – Party Down continues to rule, hard. It’s the laugh out loud funniest show on Tv right now, it’s helped me rekindle my crush on Adam Scott and it’s the type of thing I’d quote with my friends if only they’d stop doing so much real life stuff and watch more TV
  • Dollhouse – S01E09 – Lets get this straight, I’m only still watching this show out of loyalty to Whedon and the hope that all of this backstory is going to amass into something extraordinary. What’s up Joss ? I forgave Firefly, but we’re on uncertain territory.
  • Southland – S01E01 – It’s everyone you ever had a crush on in a teen movie in a TV show. Well, really it’s Ryan from the OC and Tom Everett Scott and Shawn Hatosy and a bunch of other people you remember from TV shows. I really liked it. Apparently I like cop shows this week. Cop shows starring grown up teen tv stars.

There was a load more, but I just re-read what I’d already typed and even I found it kind of scary.

I also rewatched both The Signal (awesome goodness) and The Outsiders (I’d listened to too much lifetime) and read half of ” Wish You Were Here: An Essential Guide to Your Favourite Music Scenes” the first 5 chapters of “DIY: The Rise of Lo Fi Culture” and played Bridge & Tunnel – East West to death – particularly Rubrics. Bridge and Tunnel are playing the Windmill next saturday. It is going to be awesome.

Here’s another one of the tracks from the Pink Couch Sessions at IYMI. I heart IYMI and so should you. Donate them some money!

Growin' old in a bar

Wow, this week the internet just keeps producing awesome. Punknews pointed me in the direction of this video of Gaslight covering Left of the Dial. Gaslight covering the Replacements makes me happier than potential employment.

This cover is almost better than the J Page cover on “We’ll Inherit the Earth” (which is effin great by the way, you should pick it up if you don’t have it.All our favourite bands and Christy Roads artwork) and the J Page cover somehow manages to work Pictures of You and Kiss the Bottle into the end. So yeah, it’s pretty good. Watch and sigh.

Punktry

Last night’s full moon made me crazy, so I stayed home with Su, drank a bunch of wine and listened to a lot of alt.county (until it started making her sad). I’ve had a really Cory Branan heavy day today which is never a bad thing.

I was cruising videos over at vimeo and I found this one of Lucero doing Nobody’s Darlings at the Ottobar in Baltimore and it resonated with me for a number of reasons. 1) I’m pretty sure Robyn was at this show, I miss Robyn greatly. 2) I’ve had the funnest nights at the Ottobar and 3) this may be the saddest rendition of the song I’ve ever heard. (Also it’s awesome quality, I fricken love vimeo) so yeah. Lucero. Awwwww.

her eyes might not shine…

I’m going to write a proper blog within the next couple of days, promise. Once my last day at the most depressing office in London is over I’ll surely feel inclined to write again. Today though, I just found this and it actually made things slightly better.

Hold up – – is that Brett from Riot Before covering My Best Girl all acoustic like? Wowzers.

Awesome.  also, Dear Lucero, what the fuck – it’s been almost a year. Come back already. I especially mean you Nichols.

LDN snow and how I forgave the Gaslight Anthem

So, today was the first actual snow day that London has had since 1991, ALL the buses were withdrawn and only two tube lines were running. Awesome. I was looking for a reason to spend another day in bed.

My friend Andy text me to let me know that there was an interview with Benny from Gaslight on the latest Issue Oriented podcast, and it might restore my faith in them. It did. He makes some valid points and kind of made me remember why we all got into punk in the first place.Y’all should go listen to it.

I thought about going to see them in Portsmouth on Saturday night, but the last train back to London is 10.18! Seriously. it’s no wonder no-one does anything in this godforsaken country.

But then I found the video of Gaslight on Letterman last night, and it made everything better.

It’s just starting to get dark again and it’s still snowing, the sky has got that ethereal glowy thing going on, the one that only happens when it snows at night. I only have 8 days left in the office til my garden leave starts yet I’m still hoping for another day at home tomorrow. I’m off to watch Groundhog Day and think about how many redemptive movies Bill Murray has made….
