Greg Dulli – Paper Thin Hotel

This just made my day infinitely better (and today was find out how much tax I have to pay day – so it was no small order)

Dude. That’s Greg Dulli playing a heartbreaking song on the frickin’ piano. My level of swooning is out of control.

Did I mention how excited I was about ATP this year, yet? Cos I really am.

Anyway, it’s Dulli’s favourite Cohen song, and it’s part of a series of Cohen covers call “Old Ideas With New Friends” which features among others, AC Newman, Rhett Miller and Bradford Cox (I’m looking at you Sarah, it’s like misery times infinity)

As Summer draws to a close….

Whitmore releases his official video for Field Song, off the album Field Songs. It’s pretty much perfect, and if you’re female worth watching right up to the end for some WEW based swoons.

Be warned though. It might make you want to give up your career in social media and buy a farm.

Just me then?

Jeff Caudill Record & UK Tour

Hello,

I’m going to try and blog more often than once a month. I mean it this time.

Anyway, the thing I wanted to talk to you about this June is Jeff Caudill.

It’s a well documented fact that I love(d) Gameface, and pretty much everything that Jeff has done since. You might also be aware that my favourite Gameface LP was 2001s “Always On”

The album was as radio friendly as anything the band ever did, with My Star becoming a bona fide indie radio hit. I could talk forever about each of the songs and the memories that they hold. But then that’s what was so great about Gameface, their songs were always so easy to make your own….  But I digress.

So, fast forward a decade, and Jeff has just released Always On – an acoustic LP to mark the tenth anniversary of the original. All your favourites, but acoustic and a little more mature (I swear, if the new version of Warmest Heart Attack doesn’t melt your heart just a little bit, then you probably don’t have one)

The record is available through Unless You Try, here – and is pressed on black, blue and clear vinyl. (You also get a copy of Every Last Song, the rarities and demo’s record that I love so much, with each purchase)

To support the release of this record, Jeff is heading to the UK this July. It’s a small DIY tour so it’d be awesome to see some of you there. Looking forward to the Windmill so much!

Dates are:

Monday, July 18

LONDON, UK at The Windmill Brixton

Tuesday, July 19
OXFORD, UK at The Gloucester Arms

Wednesday, July 20
SHEFFIELD, UK at The Greystones

Friday, July 22
BOLTON, UK at The Dog and Partridge

Thursday, July 28
CAMBRIDGE, UK at The Portland Arms

New Mixtapes.

Pop punk outfit of awesome Mixtapes released their new EP Hope Is Important last week. Needless to say it’s fantastic, and you should head over to http://animalstylerecords.bandcamp.com/ and pick it up for a paltry 5 bucks. It probably won’t blow your mind as it’s more of the same from Cincinatti’s finest, but it will, because they’re consistently great.

What sets Mixtapes aside from the rest of the pop punk crowd for me, isn’t just the juxtaposition of sweet female/gruff male vocals or any of that, but the slightly grumpy, don’t want to party all the time but with an underlying sense of positivity lyrics.

Anyway, enough from me, they just released a video for the title track from “Hope Is For People”. Watch it, fall in love with it and all of that Latterman inspired pop punk summer stuff.

There are still no plans for them to come to the UK as yet, but they’re heading out across the US this Summer with Dear Landlord, and later with Red City Radio. (which I’m a little gutted about missing)

pop culture overload

Hi. It’s been a little while, I’ve been using my tumblr ‘cos I haven’t really felt like writing much. My life continues it’s flux heavy passage so I decided to stay in this whole weekend to make sense of it. In fact what I did was consumed popculture by the bucketload, I’m warning you, don’t come near me – I can’t interact with you unless you’re a text.

So far this weekend I have watched:

  • The Unusuals – S01E01 – I read a Salon blog about the pilot and was stoked it was released. I can’t tell if it’s a dramedy or not. If David Lynch had directed Hill Street Blues but imagined it to be NYPB blue set in Picket Fences. That might be this. Oh, and Amber Tamblyn and Adam Goldberg rule. Really. I have missed Adam Goldberg
  • Harpers Island – S01E01 – If Point Pleasant (minus the Supernatural) met I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but was set in the Pacific Northwest, this’d be that. It features some pretty good death scenes, a somewhat intriguing plot and camerawork I haven’t seen the likes of since The Colbys. (points for having the dude who plays Bobbly from Supernatural in though)
  • Parks and Recreation – S01E04 Hmmmmm – Was it me or was this pilot a little bit on the meh, side? I was expecting a little more from Amy Poehler. It’s nice to see Paul Schneider (swoon) in something un-Southern though. I’m gonna give it another couple of episodes before I quit
  • Party Down – S01E04 – Party Down continues to rule, hard. It’s the laugh out loud funniest show on Tv right now, it’s helped me rekindle my crush on Adam Scott and it’s the type of thing I’d quote with my friends if only they’d stop doing so much real life stuff and watch more TV
  • Dollhouse – S01E09 – Lets get this straight, I’m only still watching this show out of loyalty to Whedon and the hope that all of this backstory is going to amass into something extraordinary. What’s up Joss ? I forgave Firefly, but we’re on uncertain territory.
  • Southland – S01E01 – It’s everyone you ever had a crush on in a teen movie in a TV show. Well, really it’s Ryan from the OC and Tom Everett Scott and Shawn Hatosy and a bunch of other people you remember from TV shows. I really liked it. Apparently I like cop shows this week. Cop shows starring grown up teen tv stars.

There was a load more, but I just re-read what I’d already typed and even I found it kind of scary.

I also rewatched both The Signal (awesome goodness) and The Outsiders (I’d listened to too much lifetime) and read half of ” Wish You Were Here: An Essential Guide to Your Favourite Music Scenes” the first 5 chapters of “DIY: The Rise of Lo Fi Culture” and played Bridge & Tunnel – East West to death – particularly Rubrics. Bridge and Tunnel are playing the Windmill next saturday. It is going to be awesome.

Here’s another one of the tracks from the Pink Couch Sessions at IYMI. I heart IYMI and so should you. Donate them some money!

I loved you Guinevere..

Know what I love ? Sunday afternoons on my own. All listening to Death Cab and Built to Spill and lounging around reading… I think when I was at my loneliest it was because I hadn’t realised that it was as simple as it being my choice to spend time alone, I felt like I should be around people more. I’m over that – and now I’m not lonely anymore.  I just like being alone.

Introspection aside, I’m all excited about this week – the office party promises to be a drunken affair (this not drinking thing is not going amazingly, but better than I expected it to) and then it’s Alkaline Trio in the evening and my guiltiest of all guilty pleasures the next night. Oh poppy slightly emo indie rock how I love you. And Adam Lazzara, I still love the Lazarra.

I finished Buffy season 7 again last night, no matter how many times I do that it never gets any easier. I miss having Buffy in my life. I love other TV shows (duh) but nothing has ever really taken Buffy’s place. I found this article over at Pop Vultures, while they were having their Film vs. TV week. It was nice to see someone else speak up for TV for a change, I’ve studied film for more years than I’d care to admit, but these days I’m far more about television. Seems there’s been a shift of recent too, where film seems to be more about catering to the lowest common denominator than TV does. Television shows don’t really need to, they’ve got reality shows to do that, leaving the smart folks to write smart scripts for the smart audiences.

Tara is getting here on September 13th, I’m stoked and taking time off work to prove it. We’re gonna have fun in this godforsaken town if it kills me. Did you see her new car decals? It’s the type of shit that makes me want to drive.
